The Triangle Aquatic Center celebrated the groundbreaking of the Cary aquatic facility on Saturday, June 17th at 2:00 PM at the site beside the Cary Towne Center. This will be the first public aquatic facility built in Wake County in the last eighteen years and only the second public aquatic facility to serve Wake County's 750,000 citizens. Nearly 200 supporters came out to celebrate the end of four years of planning and to begin to realize TAC's mission of building badly needed public aquatic facilities throughout Wake County.
Community and business leaders helped celebrate the kick off of this wonderful community project. Tony Gurley, Chairman of the Wake County Commissioners spoke on the benefits the aquatic facility would have throughout Wake County. Jack Smith, Mayor Pro Tem on the Cary Town Council spoke on the benefits of the facility to the Town of Cary and Howard Johnson, President of the Cary Chamber of Commerce spoke on the economic development and quality of life benefits that a facility like this would create in the community. Corporate Sponsors Mike DeBender with Wachovia Bank, Mike Carlton with Crescent State Bank, Bob Wheeler with Clancy & Theys Construction and Christy Alphin with the Cary Towne Center attended the celebration as well. And of course, Carolina Hurricanes mascot Stormy blew in to show his support and have pictures taken with the children that added to the festive occasion.
Construction will begin in July and the aquatic facility is expected to be open to the public by September of 2007. If you would like to help support this project, please give Mike Curran a call at 656-5322.
