This American Red Cross course is designed to prepare 10 – 14 year olds to take Red Cross Lifeguarding certification programs and for future work as lifeguards. The GuardStart program helps participants build a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills that they will need to be responsible lifeguards. Lessons are grouped into five main areas: prevention, response, leadership and professionalism.

2017 Lifeguard Certification Classes

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance & recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED & more!

The Blended Learning version of the ARC LG Cert course combines the online learning and on-site sessions to build on the same knowledge and skills to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situation both in and out of the water. The online format allows participants to complete the interactive lessons on their own time, allowing the Instructor led sessions to reinforce learning and emphasize on skill building.

All sessions should be completed 48 hours prior to the first class. The link for the online course work will be emailed to each participant at least 1 week prior to the class start date, once you receive the link you can start your online course work. If you have not received the link at least 1 week prior to your course start date, please email the TAC Aquatics Director, Katy Davis at kdavis@triangleaquatics.org

In order to pass the course and become a certified Lifeguard each participant must complete and pass all of the course prerequisites, interactive online sessions, pass the written exams with an 80% or higher, and complete all of the necessary final skill testing scenarios.

Once passed each participant will receive certifications in Lifeguarding/ First Aid, CPR & AED Training all valid for 2 years, along with a Blood borne pathogen training certificate valid for 1 year!

Prerequisites:

-Must be 15 years or older on or before the last day of class

-Must have a valid EMAIL address

-Must complete the online content before the first class

-Females must wear a 1 piece bathing suite.

Swim Tests:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously (no stopping/ touching the bottom of the pool)  demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using  freestyle, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles are allowed.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits, or with their hands out of the water.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using  freestyle or breaststroke. The face may be in or out of the water. Submerge to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object at the surface of the water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Swim goggles are not

If you do not pass the above prerequisite components,

you will not be able to continue in the class and you will NOT receive a refund!

2017 Lifeguard Re-Certification Classes

If you are needing to get re-certified, you must have a current LG certification or have one that expires no more than 30 days past the expiration date in order to take this course. Please bring your current or expired LG cert to the first class to verify eligibility.

Each participant must complete the following prerequisites on the first day of class in order to complete the re-certification. You can find the list of prerequisites listed above, under Lifeguard Certification.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course is to train the instructor candidates to teach courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program, CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, Bloodborne Pathogens. This course includes the American Red Cross Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT). Note: The Instructor course is not designed to teach you the required basic level knowledge or skills*. This course is dedicated to developing instructor candidates’ understanding of how to use the course materials, how to conduct training sessions, and how to accurately evaluate participants’ progress.
