- Select the year in which you completed your class. While the month is optional, ensure the correct year is actively selected.

Lifeguard Certification Course
Course Tuition – $309.00
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
To participate in an American Red Cross lifeguarding course, participants must:
- Provide proof of identity and age. Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
- Successfully complete Lifeguard Certification Pre-Course: Water Skills Requirement Class. This prerequisite swimming skills evaluation is designed to confirm that participants have the physical ability to successfully participate in the training. The evaluation includes an endurance swim that includes treading water using only the legs, and a timed event that involves retrieving a 10-pound submerged object, swimming it back to the exit point and exiting the water without using a ladder or steps. The courses in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program focus on developing knowledge and skills in four main areas:
- Foundational lifeguarding concepts, such as recognition of distressed swimmers and drowning persons, surveillance and scanning technique, and injury prevention
- Water rescue and extrication
- Resuscitation (including giving ventilations, providing CPR and using an AED) and first aid
- Individual and team rescue and response
To successfully complete their American Red Cross lifeguarding training and receive certification, participants must:
- Complete all online coursework in advance of the corresponding in-person session.
The online portion must be completed PRIOR to the start of the in-class portion. The online session for the Lifeguarding course has 16 modules and takes approximately 6 hours to complete all modules of the online session. Each individual module takes approximately 15 – 30 minutes to complete. The online portion can be found by visiting https://redcrosslearning.com/auth/login two weeks before your course date (Please allow up to 24 hours after registration for your online course to be activated). It is important that participants use their own email address when signing up to be properly credited for their work.
- Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions.
- Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during skill practices, skill drills, activities and scenarios.
- Demonstrate proficiency in all skills taught in the course, including conducting surveillance, performing water rescues, responding to emergencies and providing resuscitation and first aid care.
- Pass a final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent.
- Pass three final skill assessments:
- Assessment 1 – Timed Response Participants must complete a passive submerged rescue, extricate with the assistance of an assisting rescuer, and rapid assessment (including the delivery of 2 initial ventilations by either rescuer) within 1 minute, 30 seconds, and then provide 3 minutes of single-rescuer CPR.
- Assessment 2 – Rotation and Scanning Participants must rotate into the lifeguard station, conduct surveillance from the station for 1 minute, and rotate out of the station.
- Assessment 3 – Final Team Response Testing Scenario Participants must perform a passive submerged rescue, extrication and rapid assessment, followed by multiple-rescuer CPR and use of AED and BVM resuscitator.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a certificate for Lifeguarding, Shallow Water Lifeguarding or Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding that includes CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid and is valid for 2 years.

Lifeguard Re-Certification Course
Course Tuition – $189.00
If you are needing to get re-certified, you must have a current LG certification or have one that expires no more than 30 days past the expiration date in order to take this course. You are required to bring your current or expired LG cert to the first class to verify eligibility.
Each participant must complete the prerequisites on the first day of class in order to complete the re-certification. You can find the list of prerequisites listed above, under Lifeguard Certification.
The Blended Learning version of the ARC LG Cert course combines the online learning and on-site sessions to build on the same knowledge and skills to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situation both in and out of the water. The online format allows participants to complete the interactive lessons on their own time, allowing the Instructor led sessions to reinforce learning and emphasize on skill building.
In order to pass the course and become a certified Lifeguard each participant must complete and pass all of the course prerequisites, interactive online sessions, pass the written exams with an 80% or higher, and complete all of the necessary final skill testing scenarios.
Once passed each participant will receive certifications in Lifeguarding/ First Aid, CPR & AED Training all valid for 2 years, along with a Blood borne pathogen training certificate valid for 1 year!

Lifeguard Instructor Certification Course

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Lifeguarding, Lifeguarding Blended Learning, Shallow Water Lifeguarding, Water Park Skills, CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers, Administering Emergency Oxygen and Bloodborne Pathogens Training courses and/or modules
Course Prerequisites:
- Be at least 17 years of age
- Possess a current basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification
- Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor Course, which consists of the following: Orientation to the American Red Cross, and Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course and Precourse Exam – The online portion must be completed PRIOR to the start of the in-class portion. The online portion can take up to 9 or more hours and can be found by CLICKING HERE.
- Sucessfully complete the Pre-Course Session
- Obtain the Lifeguarding Instructor’s Manual and Lifeguarding Manual after you have successfully completed the Precourse Session
Criteria for certification:
- Successfully complete the online Introduction to the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Course
- Successfully complete the Pre-Course Skills Session
- Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
- Successfully complete class activities, including the four practice-teaching assignments
- Demonstrate instructor-level skill competency in all skills and scenarios
- Score a minimum of 80 percent on the instructor course final written exam
